The Water-board: A Huge Favorite of the CIA But Also Very Unethical, Illegal and Ineffective It s practice has spanned thousands of years, dating even to biblical times. It has been used by every civilization, and even its prohibition does not prevent its use today. We are of course talking about none other than torture. Torture has been regarded as the highest form of truth and in Roman times was thought to be the only way to extract some information. Some of the earliest forms of torture include crucifixion, stoning, and burning alive. There have always been those who opposed it, such as Aristotle who said â€Å"evidence from torture may be considered completely untrustworthy†, and the morality of torture has been such a controversial issue, the world has come together to form documents and treaties outlawing its use. In any case, torture – in particular the method of water-boarding –should not be used as a way of information collection because it is unethical, highly illegal, and ineffective. The first internationally recognized document regarding torture and other rights granted to humans was the Universal Declaration Of Human Rights (UDHR) written by John Humphrey of the United Nations Secretariat, which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.
